Before you give result sheets to learners have it at the back of your mind that so much is expected from that result, in fact it seem to be the receipt for the payment made by parents for their wards as their expectations are always high.
And because emotions are involved, school management should do the following
- Insist that every child’s result is a reflection of who they are. “Dashing” marks or cooking up scores by teachers to please parents should be vehemently discouraged because when the result don’t reflect who they are, parents become disappointed.
- Take at least two days to go through the results thoroughly
- Have a result conference where each teacher will publicly defend the result of their learners.
- Look out for high performers and especially LOW PERFORMERS.
- Find out why the performance is such and why was it not discussed earlier from week 2 to the end o the term. If the performance was raised as a concern during the term, find out what was done to remedy it.
- Because the emotions of parents are involved in the result of their wards the school should as a way of managing the situation
- Work on the type of comments written on the result of the child by teachers
- You may withdraw the result of under performed learners and seek audience with the parents directly in the office when they come for the result. This avenue will help the parent know how concerned you are about the learning of their wards and the efforts the school have put in to remedy the situation.
This avenue will also help them vent their displeasure at you and the positive answers you give will help minimize what they would have said behind you.
It is nice you give such results by hand to the parents or guardians.
In schools where pupils go with their result ( though this is not best practice. Best practice suggest that results should be given to an adult who would sign to pick the result and not a minor) the school should withhold the result of the under performed learner and give a slip to the learner to invite his/her parent.
A lot of parents remove their wards from a school when they feel the school has no answer to their children’s under performing performance.
With early intervention, with the right approach, parents satisfaction will be at its optimum in schools.
As a remedy and soft landing ground, if a child performance is low due to ill health and other circumstances which the parents genuinely communicated to the school about but missed some assessment due to the teacher’s negligence; in such cases, there is nothing wrong in giving a make up to remedy those assessments or test.
You are all valued!
Thanks.✍️
